The
Interventional & Vascular Institute of
Northern Michigan was founded in 2003, dedicated
to providing state-of-the-art technology and
patient care to the people of Northern Michigan.
Located in Marquette, affiliated with and
on the main campus of Marquette General Health
System, the Institute is under the direction
of Dr. Christopher Mehall. Dr. Mehall is fellowship-trained
and board-certified in the subspecialty of
Vascular &Interventional Radiology. Previously
on staff at Wayne State University in Detroit,
Dr. Mehall now serves as the Director of Vascular
& Interventional Radiology at Marquette
General Hospital.
The Institute not only utilizes state-of-the-art
facilities and technology, but also collaborates
closely with the medical and surgical specialists
of Marquette General Health System to provide
the best possible medical care and a treatment
plan that is tailored to the needs of individual
patients.
What
is Interventional Radiology?
Interventional
Radiology is one of the fastest growing areas
of medicine and is one of the most recently
recognized medical specialties by the American
Board of Medical specialists and the American
Medical Association. Interventional radiologists
specialize in minimally invasive, targeted
treatments, performed under the guidance of
medical imaging. They utilize their expertise
in readings medical imaging studies, such
as x-rays, CAT scans, MRI and ultrasound,
to guide very small instruments such as catheters
through the skin and blood vessels, to treat
disease, often eliminating the need for open
surgery.
The subspecialty of interventional radiology
began to develop in the mid 1970’s.
Interventional radiologists invented the angioplasty
technique and the first catheter-delivered
stents, to save patients with peripheral vascular
disease from amputations or other surgery.
These advances were at the forefront of what
we now think of as modern medicine, and gave
rise to many of the state-of-the-art medical
treatments that are thought of as commonplace
today.
As medical technology continues to advance,
interventional radiologists continue to provide
patients and their referring physicians more
choices and treatment options. The Vascular
& Interventional Institute of Northern
Michigan continues to provide these choices
to the people of northern Michigan…
The
advantages of Interventional Radiology?
-Most procedures are
performed on an outpatient basis or will
require only a very short hospital stay
-Most procedures are done with mild sedation.
General anesthetic is usually not required.
-Complications, pain, and recovery time
are often greatly reduced as compared with
traditional treatments
